Missing American Woman in Grenada May Have Drowned

A missing American woman in Grenada may have drowned after swimming far offshore, according to her husband, who said a group of jet skiers spoke with her shortly before she disappeared. Elizabeth “Liz” Waddell, 43, a North Carolina woman on a girls’ trip to the Caribbean, went missing on July 22, and new details shared by her husband point to her last known moments in the water.

In an update posted to the family’s website, Cailen Waddell said the jet skiers spent several minutes trying to persuade her to ride back in on a jet ski instead of staying in the ocean. He wrote that they talked with her for five or ten minutes and that she reportedly replied, “I’m a good swimmer,” while giving them a thumbs up. The conversation allegedly took place around 5:30 p.m., the same day she was reported missing to the Royal Grenada Police Force.

Waddell said he is facing the painful possibility that his wife is gone, while still hoping the case will become clearer. He wrote that he is grieving her absence and the loss of her in daily life, and that it is “incredibly likely she is gone,” while he waits for the investigation to explain what happened. The family has been using a website they created to share updates on the search.
