Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made the egg-freezing process the center of a fresh political conversation this weekend after sharing a personal fertility decision on Instagram. The New York Democrat said Saturday that she had begun the process and used the moment to argue that women face too little support and too many pressures around reproductive choices.
In the video, Ocasio-Cortez said she had kept the matter private before deciding to speak publicly. She told followers she had been weighing the choice for a long time and had saved for it over an extended period. She also said there is not enough information available for women who are considering similar steps, calling the experience daunting for many. In the clip, she showed herself injecting medication into her stomach, part of the routine involved in fertility preservation, and said the shot “wasn’t so bad.”
From there, the congresswoman broadened her remarks into a larger critique of how women are educated about their bodies. She said women are not prepared for major life stages such as puberty, pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause. She then tied the issue to the current political climate, saying the administration is dedicated to politicizing women’s bodies and stripping away choices about pregnancy. Ocasio-Cortez went further, saying this administration has made pregnancy more dangerous than at any point in more than 30 years. She did not cite supporting data or specific policies in the video.
The remarks came from a lawmaker who has long used Instagram and other direct-to-supporter channels to speak on both policy and personal matters. Ocasio-Cortez has represented New York’s 14th congressional district since first winning election in November 2018 and taking office the following January. She noted in the video that she entered the House at age 29 and became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, a milestone she described as part of the pressure of growing up in public.
