Border Collies Rescued From Florida Home Stunned Deputies

At least 20 Border Collies were rescued from a Palm City, Florida, home after deputies found what Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek described as a scene covered in filth. The Border Collies rescue came after officers executed a search warrant at the property Monday and moved in wearing hazmat suits.

Authorities said the dogs were badly matted and in poor condition, with some so altered by neglect that they were hard to recognize as they were brought out. Budensiek told reporters that the house was in severe disrepair, with damaged walls, destroyed furniture and animals living in deplorable conditions. By the time deputies entered, he said, “feces over every square inch” covered the interior.

Former American Kennel Club breeder Paige O’Donnell, 62, was taken into custody at the home. Deputies had been watching the property after complaints from neighbors, and Budensiek said animal services detectives had placed her under surveillance. He also said officials were concerned they could find dead animals at the residence as the investigation continued.

Budensiek said O’Donnell had been on the sheriff’s office radar for some time, but had used heavy fencing to block access to the property. He said she first drew attention in 2020 over allegations of animal mistreatment, though animal control officers cleared her at the time. The sheriff also said O’Donnell has no prior criminal record, but has had an alcohol problem and was treated for alcohol abuse against her will at some point between 2020 and 2022.
