Damon Darling’s Walmart ban has turned one of social media’s best-known kindness creators into the center of a new online fight. The influencer, who built a huge following by buying strangers’ groceries and other acts of generosity, said he was barred for life from Walmart after a confrontation at an Ohio store.
Darling posted video of the encounter, showing a Walmart employee telling him to leave and then a police officer informing him he had been banned from all Walmart locations, along with Sam’s Club and Murphy’s gas station. In the clip, Darling said a manager had told him he could film there, and he showed a moment in which a woman who identified herself as the manager fist-bumped him and appeared to support the effort. His post has drawn more than 3.1 million views since Sunday.
“I’m just buying people’s groceries!” Darling said in the video as the dispute unfolded. He also said, “I’m just helping people’s heart out,” describing the work that made him famous for leaving shoppers emotional with surprise acts of kindness. At one point, he said he did not know where he would go next, adding that Walmart was the place where “the people need me.” He contrasted that with Target, saying, “Target don’t need me, man!”
Walmart said in a statement that Darling “has repeatedly violated our policies through disruptive behavior and trespassing, unrelated to any charitable giving,” and did not spell out the incidents behind the decision. The company’s response framed the dispute as a policy issue rather than a rejection of his charitable activity, even as Darling’s supporters saw it very differently.
