Republicans are split over a farm bill that would give legal status to some undocumented farmworkers. House Agriculture Committee Chairman G.T. Thompson introduced the measure on Tuesday, and it quickly exposed a sharp divide inside the party.
Farmers have been warning for months that crops are at risk because of labor shortages. The bill is aimed at that pressure point, but it has already drawn resistance from GOP lawmakers who oppose giving legal status to people who are in the country illegally.
