Hungary's president to exit after court fight as Tamás Sulyok agreed to step down after parliament approved a constitutional amendment that will end his presidency at midnight on Sunday. The move sets up another major shift in Hungary's political power struggle, this time centered on the presidency and the new government’s drive to clear out figures it sees as tied to the old order.
Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s Tisza party pushed the change through parliament to remove Sulyok, who is widely viewed as a loyalist of former prime minister Viktor Orbán. Sulyok had five days to sign the amendment or face a drawn-out constitutional crisis and possible impeachment proceedings. He signed it as the deadline expired on Saturday evening, but said in a statement that Magyar’s government was breaking the rule of law.
