Social media videos showed people wading through knee-deep water, cars trapped in standing water, and emergency crews rescuing multiple people. The heavy rain hit New York City and New Jersey hard, with the flooding spreading across a wide area that also includes Connecticut.
The weather also caused trouble for travel and sports. Several flights were disrupted on the eve of the World Cup final in New Jersey, and a Yankees-Dodgers game in the Bronx was among the local sporting events called off because of the rain. The torrential rain left commuters, drivers, and fans dealing with the kind of sudden chaos that can upend a normal summer day.
