A major ballistic missile attack on Kyiv killed one person and wounded at least 14, according to Ukrainian officials.
Russia’s ballistic missile attack on Kyiv left one person dead and at least 14 others wounded, Ukrainian officials said, as the capital came under one of the heaviest strikes reported since the start of the full-scale invasion. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the assault was “one of the most massive ballistic attacks on Kyiv” since Russia launched its war.
Ukrainian authorities said the overnight attack struck several areas in and around the city. The military said its air defences intercepted 18 of 41 missiles and also shot down 108 drones. The Ukrainian air force said the attack included Iskander missiles, Zircon hypersonic missiles and 125 drones. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said both residential and non-residential buildings were damaged, including a supermarket and a dormitory.
Zelensky said on Telegram that Russia had fired about 1,450 strike drones, more than 1,640 guided bombs and 99 missiles of different types against Ukraine over the past week. The latest ballistic missile attack on Kyiv added fresh pressure on a city that has faced repeated overnight strikes throughout the war.
Ukraine has also kept up its own long-range drone campaign against targets inside Russia. The governor of Russia’s south-western Stavropol region said a drone attack caused a fire in an industrial park. Ukrainian strikes this month have hit warehouses belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, in attacks that killed eight people and caused major fires. Officials said seven people died and 25 were injured at a site in Tambov, while one person died and 37 were hurt at another warehouse in Elektrostal near Moscow.
Zelensky said Ukraine’s operations were a response to Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure and towns and cities. He also said Ukraine has been stepping up strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, with Kyiv saying earlier this month that nearly 43% of Russia’s oil refining capacity had been disabled.
