A Kentucky middle school teacher is facing a felony charge after investigators say conduct involving a student at Graves County Middle School crossed from inappropriate behavior into criminal territory. Sadie M. Flores, 25, of Mayfield, was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with grooming a minor, according to authorities.
The arrest came just weeks after the Kentucky law behind the charge took effect on July 15. The Graves County Sheriff’s Office says Flores, who worked at Graves County Middle School, is accused of having an improper relationship with a student in the district. Deputies said the complaint was first reported to Graves County Schools, and district administrators then alerted law enforcement immediately, setting off a criminal investigation.
Detectives said the case has included the seizure of electronic records, interviews and other investigative steps. Flores was interviewed Friday afternoon before being taken into custody around 3:30 p.m. She was booked into the Graves County Restricted Custody Center and later moved to an out-of-county detention facility. Sheriff Jon Hayden said the investigation is still ongoing.
Graves County Schools Superintendent Matt Madding said district leaders acted as soon as they learned of the allegations. In a statement, he said school officials notified the Graves County Sheriff’s Department right away and later learned that charges had been filed. Madding said the district’s ability to speak publicly is limited because both the investigation and the personnel matter remain open, but he stressed that student safety is the system’s top priority.
