New York Fugitive Captured After Father’s Death

Police in New York captured the fugitive sought in the death of his father and a house fire in Greenville, bringing a multiday manhunt to an end. Thomas David Ryan, 32, was taken into custody Sunday in the Gilboa area of Schoharie County after state police and other agencies spent days tracking him across the state.

State police had described Ryan as armed and dangerous while searching for him in connection with the death of his father, Robert Ryan, 70. Investigators say Robert Ryan was found dead inside his burning Greenville home Thursday evening. Police determined the fire was intentionally set and treated the case as a homicide. Authorities have not said how Robert Ryan died.

The search began around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, when troopers were called to a house fire on Greenville Turnpike in Orange County. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and found a man inside the home. He was later identified as Robert Ryan. Police then turned their focus to his son, who they believed had left in his father’s gray 2016 Toyota Prius.

As the manhunt grew, investigators pushed residents in Greenville and nearby communities to review surveillance footage from about 6 p.m. Thursday through the overnight hours. Police also warned the public not to approach Ryan if seen and instead to call 911. Officials did not say how he was located on Sunday or provide details of the arrest, saying more information would come later.
