A Texas brothers shooting in San Antonio has left a family grieving after two brothers were fatally shot while backing a car into their driveway. Dravyn Quiroz, 20, and his 11-year-old brother Maliki Perales died within 12 hours of each other after police say a neighbor opened fire in what investigators described as a sudden and apparently unprovoked attack.
Authorities say Daniel Antonio Perez, 40, began shooting after one of the brothers noticed a man staring. The family had no known history of disputes with him, according to the report. Quiroz was backing up a car in the driveway when the younger brother went outside, and both were struck in the gunfire. Their father, Andrew Perales, told KSAT, “I hear pops, my wife starts screaming.” He also said he tripped over one of his sons during the chaos while the shooter was across the street reloading and firing again.
Maliki Perales, who was set to begin middle school, died just before 8:50 p.m., about one hour and 20 minutes after the shots were fired. Andrew Perales said he carried the boy to a Dollar General store about a quarter-mile away before the child was rushed to a hospital. Dravyn Quiroz died less than 12 hours later. The family later remembered both boys as fighters, and their father said he raised them with good morals and good values.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar called the case deeply tragic and said the family had been caught off guard by what he described as a dangerous neighbor. He said investigators believe Perez was a “ticking time bomb” and added that there was “no reason to believe” there had been any provocation. Salazar said Perez’s family told investigators he had experienced mental health episodes before, though they had not reported them to authorities. He also said the suspect suffered from depression and was “seeing things that were not there.”
