Treasury fraud system checks stopped nearly $100 million in taxpayer payments that were linked to deceased recipients, according to the U.S. Treasury Department. The agency said the expanded screening effort is meant to catch improper payments before federal money leaves government accounts.
The Treasury Department’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service said it found more than 4,900 attempted disbursements tied to dead recipients. Officials said the new verification system is part of a broader push to identify bad payments earlier and protect taxpayer funds from being sent out in error.
