Ukraine’s army chief has been dismissed in the latest shake-up by President Volodymyr Zelensky, with Oleksandr Syrskyi removed after days of protests over changes in the government and military leadership. The move comes only days after the removal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
The dismissal of Fedorov set off street protests across the country, according to the report, and early rumours about why he was gone were later confirmed. At 35, Fedorov had gained a strong public reputation for pushing reforms, energising the ministry, and leading an anti-corruption drive. He was also credited with helping transform the armed forces.
Syrskyi, 60, was viewed by many in Ukraine as a commander shaped by the Soviet military tradition, with critics seeing him as reluctant to make sweeping changes in the army. His removal now extends the fallout from the earlier decision to push Fedorov out of his post.
