Michael Alfonso has won the Republican primary in the Wisconsin 7th Congressional District, giving President Donald Trump’s endorsed candidate the nomination in a race that drew a crowded field. Alfonso, 26, is the son-in-law of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy, and he will now move on to the general election in a district that has been a reliable Republican stronghold for years.
Trump praised Alfonso on Truth Social ahead of Tuesday’s election, calling him a “MAGA Warrior” and a young “STAR.” The president said Alfonso would focus on growing the economy, cutting taxes and regulations, supporting farmers and ranchers, promoting U.S.-made goods, expanding American energy production, keeping the border secure, stopping migrant crime, backing military veterans, safeguarding elections, and protecting Second Amendment rights. The endorsement gave Alfonso a powerful boost in a district where Trump carried about 60% of the vote in the 2024 presidential election.
The Wisconsin 7th Congressional District has been in Republican hands for 15 years and is rated solidly Republican by the Cook Political Report. The seat is currently held by Rep. Tom Tiffany, who also won the GOP nomination on Tuesday in Wisconsin’s race for governor. Tiffany first won the district in a May 2020 special election after Duffy stepped down because of one of his children’s health issues. That history gives the contest added significance for Republicans, who are trying to keep a hold on a district that has been central to their strength in northern Wisconsin.
Alfonso’s path to the nomination came through a field of multiple Republican contenders, but he emerged with Trump’s backing and the family connection to a former holder of the seat. The race also keeps the spotlight on one of Wisconsin’s most conservative congressional districts, where party loyalty and national politics often overlap. For Republicans, the result suggests the Trump endorsement still carries weight in primary contests, especially in areas where his support remains strong.
