The University of Washington has canceled a Hasan Piker lecture, scrapping the planned appearance of the progressive streamer in its Speaker Series after officials said the event did not clear the school’s planning standards. The talk had been scheduled for January as part of the 2026-27 Speaker Series.
In a statement, the university said it reviewed the process used to organize the event and decided it fell short of what is required for university-hosted programming. Officials said the process for arranging the lecture “did not meet the necessary level of rigor” for Speaker Series events. The school also said it will update its procedures going forward so University-hosted events better meet those standards, especially when the school is trying to foster dialogue on divisive subjects during a polarized period in the country.
The cancellation quickly drew pushback from free-speech advocates. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, known as FIRE, said on X that if the decision was truly based on process and not pressure, the University of Washington should explain which standards were missed and how they were applied. The group argued that public universities may set event standards, but should not use them as a cover for canceling speakers because of their views.
Andrew Kolvet, executive producer of The Charlie Kirk Show and a Turning Point USA spokesperson, also weighed in on X. He said the university should allow Piker to speak, while adding that he should be able to avoid calling for the death of political opponents. Kolvet also said universities often handle Turning Point USA events the same way, blaming administrative mistakes or similar excuses, and called that wrong.

Piker, who built a large following as a socialist commentator on Twitch and YouTube, has long faced controversy. He previously said America “deserved 9/11” before later describing that remark as “inappropriate.” More recently, he faced criticism after urging consequences for Democrats who do not support Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. He said Democrats should use “Marxist-Leninist” punishment against anyone who fails to “follow the party line,” while also saying debate inside the party is expected before decisions are made.
Those comments came two days after El-Sayed won the Democratic nomination by narrowly defeating Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., in the primary. Piker had appeared with El-Sayed on the campaign trail. El-Sayed is now set to face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in November.
Democratic strategist James Carville, who has criticized Piker before, renewed that criticism in remarks earlier this month. He said he would not want to be in the same party as Piker and said he would leave if Piker became a force inside the Democratic Party. In a separate interview, Carville said Democrats will have to decide in the 2028 primary what direction the party is taking as Piker’s views become more common.
