The New York Democratic congresswoman posted clips on Sunday showing herself taking an injection and discussing the early steps, including questions about cost, clinical procedures, storage, and how fertility care works in what she described as the United States’ broken medical system.
In an interview with ABC News, Ocasio-Cortez said she wanted to normalize discussion of the procedure, especially at a time when reproductive care remains a political flashpoint. She said the issue matters in the current climate because, in her view, the administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy. She argued that leaders should be willing to speak openly about these experiences and the choices that come with them.
She also said in an earlier Instagram post that she was willing to share the information despite what she called a political risk. The comments placed Ocasio-Cortez in a familiar spot for one of the Democratic Party’s most visible figures: using her own life to make a broader political point. The decision to discuss egg freezing publicly adds a personal dimension to a debate that has become increasingly tied to access, autonomy and the state of reproductive health care in the US.
The timing also comes as questions continue to swirl around her political future. Asked on ABC News This Week whether she had ruled out running for president in 2028, Ocasio-Cortez did not close the door. She said she was focused on winning the midterms and was running for Congress now, but added that she had not ruled out the possibility and was humbled by the support she has received.
