Anas Sarwar poised for Burnham cabinet role

There would be no by-election for Sarwar’s Holyrood seat because he was elected from the regional list. New rules brought in last year also stop politicians from sitting in both Westminster and Holyrood at the same time, which makes the move a clean break from the Scottish Parliament. Sarwar had publicly ruled out taking a seat in the House of Lords earlier this year, saying he was focused on serving Glasgow and, at the time, on his ambition to become first minister.

The decision is already drawing sharp reaction. BBC Scotland Westminster correspondent Paris Gourtsoyannis said Scottish Labour parliamentarians appeared to have been caught off guard. One MSP called the move “bizarre,” while a senior Scottish Labour MP said it was “absolutely mad.” Scotland’s First Minister and SNP leader John Swinney wished Sarwar well in his “exciting new job” but said Burnham had sent a poor signal by giving Sarwar a place in government and a life peerage after Labour’s worst result in Scottish Parliament election history.

Reform UK’s Scotland deputy leader Thomas Kerr also accused Sarwar of walking away from voters who trusted him, while former Scottish Labour leader Jim Murphy said the appointment was probably good for Sarwar personally and could strengthen Burnham’s government. The move now points to a new leadership contest in Scottish Labour, and it will test how quickly Burnham can bring together a divided party. In plain terms, this matters because it could reshape Scottish Labour’s leadership just as the party tries to recover from a bruising election result.
