Diane Abbott Readmitted After Labour Suspension

Abbott said she had received a formal warning. In a post on X, she said she had been readmitted under party rules and through the independent review process. She also said she had been warned over a tweet in which she referred to the Israel Defense Forces as the “Jewish Defence Force.” Abbott said she regretted language that, in her words, conflated the actions of the state of Israel with the Jewish community, and said she was sorry for any hurt caused. She added that she has always opposed racism and remains committed to doing so.

The Labour spokesperson said the membership decisions were taken independently of the leadership and without political interference. That framing matters because the dispute has carried clear political weight inside the party, with some members pressing for her return while others argued the earlier remarks were too serious to brush aside. More than 38,000 people signed a petition backing her readmission, showing the depth of feeling around the case.

Abbott, the MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, was first suspended in 2023 after a letter to the Observer in which she said Irish, Jewish and Traveller people experience prejudice but not all their lives are subject to racism. She was readmitted before the 2024 general election, but a BBC interview more than a year ago revived the controversy when she said she did not regret the incident and stood by her original remarks. That led to her second suspension in July 2025, and she has been sitting as an independent MP since then.
