France Wildfires Force 55,000 More Out

France wildfires have pushed another 55,000 people from their homes south of Bordeaux, as firefighters struggle to slow fast-moving blazes in the Gironde region. The evacuations came overnight into Sunday, with officials warning that the fire was acting unpredictably and threatening communities in one of France’s best-known wine regions.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said conditions remained very unfavorable, and he described the fire as moving erratically toward Bordeaux. Fire crews on the ground were even more blunt. Captain Nicolas Braz, one of the leaders of the firefighting operation, said the flames were generating their own winds, including whirlwinds, and called the blaze erratic and unmanageable. Officials have downplayed the chance that Bordeaux itself will need to be evacuated, but the scale of the emergency is already plain.

The latest evacuations add to an already massive displacement across the south-west. More than 220,000 people have been evacuated there in total. Nuñez said about 42,000 hectares have burned in the south-west, making it one of the largest forest fires since World War Two, while about 115,000 hectares have burned across France since the start of the year. Residents in Le Porge, one of the coastal towns affected, have also organized an improvised volunteer effort to help exhausted firefighters by cooking meals and offering places to rest between shifts.

The human cost is visible in the town itself. Le Porge has a population of about 3,500, and more than 150 houses there have been destroyed. Volunteer Nathalie Augonnet said many firefighters had never faced a fire of this size before. She said she felt devastated for the town, its forests, its wildlife, and the people who have lost so much, while noting that the hardest part may come later, when reconstruction begins.
