Minneapolis-Area Daycare Killing Leaves Three Dead

A Minneapolis-area daycare killing left three people dead Wednesday after police responded to a domestic call at an in-home child care site in Hopkins, Minnesota. Officers found a man, a woman and a child dead inside Brown Bear Daycare, according to police, in a case that authorities described as a domestic-related homicide.

Hopkins Police Chief Brent Johnson said the call came in around 9 a.m. at the home daycare on Tyler Avenue North. He said the three victims are believed to be family members. Johnson also said the six other children at the daycare were not hurt and have since been reunited with their families. A parent who arrived to drop off a child is believed to have witnessed the incident, Johnson said.

Johnson called the scene devastating and said there is no worse outcome for families who expect a safe place for their children. He told Fox 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul that the emotional impact was immediate for the community and that people in Hopkins would feel the loss deeply. In a separate statement, the Hopkins Police Department said it responded to a report of a stabbing at a residence operating as a home daycare in the 200 block of Tyler Avenue North.

Police later said they believe there are no outstanding suspects and no ongoing threat to the public. Johnson said investigators believe the dead man was the person responsible for the isolated incident and that he took his own life. Authorities have not described any wider danger tied to the case, and they framed the episode as a closed-off act within the home rather than an active public threat.
