A man was shot in the stomach and arm after gunfire erupted inside a possible after-hours club in a high-rise in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday morning, police said, in a case that unfolded near one of the city’s busiest transportation centers. The shooting took place at 247 West 30th Street, a building near Penn Station, around 7:30 a.m., according to authorities.
The victim, believed to be in his 30s, managed to get outside after being hit and flagged down police officers on the street, an NYPD spokesman said. Emergency medical workers responded quickly and transported him to Bellevue Hospital, where he was later undergoing surgery, police said. His condition was not immediately clear beyond the fact that he had suffered gunshot wounds to the stomach and arm.
Detectives recovered one shell casing on the second floor of the location, which a police source said appeared to be an after-hours club or event space. That detail suggested the shooting may have occurred inside the building before the injured man made it back to the street for help. Investigators were still working to determine what happened inside the venue, including who fired the shot and what led up to the violence.
Blood was visible on the sidewalk outside the building between Seventh and Eighth avenues, a stark sign of how the incident spilled out of the property and into a heavily trafficked part of Midtown. The address is only about a half dozen blocks from the Empire State Building and sits near Penn Station, an area that is usually crowded with commuters, workers, tourists, and travelers moving through the neighborhood at all hours.
