The Toronto US consulate shooting is under investigation after police say a single round struck the building early Monday, marking the second time this year the consulate has come under fire. Officers on scene reported that the suspect fled in a white car without a licence plate, and police briefly gave chase before breaking it off for safety reasons.
Toronto police said no one was hurt in the incident. Investigators recovered one shell casing and found damage to the building’s facade. Deputy Chief Frank Barredo said at least two people were inside the consulate at the time, but described the building as heavily fortified and said those inside likely did not hear the gunshot. Police have asked officers across the city to watch for the possible suspects while the investigation continues.
The shooting took place around 04:45 local time, and Toronto police are working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and international law enforcement partners. Supt Jonathan Ko of the RCMP called it “another troubling incident.” Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow called the attack “brazen” and said, “I want to say to the person or persons responsible: We will get you.” Barredo likewise said authorities would bring those responsible to justice.
The latest Toronto US consulate shooting follows a similar episode in March, when shots were fired outside the same building and police later described that case as a national security incident. No one was injured in that earlier attack either. Since then, officers have been stationed outside the consulate, underscoring how seriously Canadian authorities have treated the site.
That March case widened further in June, when police carried out raids connected to the investigation. During that operation, Toronto police officer Marc Pinizzotto, 43, was killed. Police later arrested several suspects aged 18 and 19 for allegedly carrying out a series of shootings, including the March consulate incident, as part of what investigators described as a broader gun-for-hire network. Those earlier arrests give the current case a wider security context even though police have not said the latest shooting is linked.
