Barrientos told the District Court of Western Australia on Monday that the “vibes were good” between him and the woman who says he raped her, marking his first appearance in the witness box a week into the trial.
Barrientos, 30, is accused of sexually assaulting the woman, who was 20 at the time, in his hotel room after he performed in Hillarys, a coastal suburb of Perth. He has pleaded not guilty to six counts of sexual penetration without consent, three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, and one count of strangulation. The case has drawn attention because it involves a well-known online personality and entertainer facing serious criminal charges in a high-profile Australian court.
On the stand, Barrientos said he was attracted to the woman when they met at the concert venue. He described being in the VIP area while she leaned over the barrier from the general section. He told the court he remembered placing a hand on her waist, but denied touching her breasts or putting his hands down her pants. He also said the atmosphere between them remained positive later, when they arrived at his hotel.
The court has already heard a different account of what happened inside the room. Earlier testimony said the pair had consensual sex before Barrientos became violent and the woman told him to stop. That dispute sits at the heart of the trial and will likely shape how jurors assess the credibility of each side’s version of events.
