Critics went so far as to call the new look soulless and generic, while President Trump joined the criticism and urged the chain to bring back its original logo. He later congratulated the company on its reversal.
Masino did not comment on her resignation, though Cracker Barrel’s leadership thanked her for her service. In a filing, the company said her departure package is expected to be worth about $4.6 million. Cracker Barrel declined to comment further and pointed to the filing instead.
The logo revolt lands at a delicate moment for the Tennessee-based chain, which operates nearly 660 country-themed stores and restaurants across 44 states. The company has long depended on a loyal customer base that expects a familiar blend of comfort food, rustic decor, and old-school branding. That makes any change to the menu, the dining rooms, or the logo a risky move, especially when regulars see it as a break with the company’s history.
This is not the first time Cracker Barrel has run into trouble with its customers over changes to the brand. In 2022, the chain faced online backlash after adding plant-based sausages to its breakfast menu. The repeated pushback shows how hard it can be for a legacy restaurant chain to chase younger diners without alienating the people who kept it afloat in the first place.
Business observers say the tension goes beyond one restaurant chain. Jo-Ellen Pozner, an associate professor at Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business, said the leadership change reflects the polarization many Americans feel now. She added that leaning harder into conservative values might help win back vocal loyalists, but it could also limit the company’s options for growth.
Cracker Barrel is also under financial pressure. Shares fell more than 2% after Monday’s announcement and remain about a fifth lower than they were a year ago. The company has said sales are falling, customer traffic is slowing, and costs are rising, even as it faces competition from chains such as Denny’s and IHOP for budget-conscious diners looking for classic American comfort food. Masino is staying on through October to help Deno with the transition. For American consumers, the takeaway is simple: even a familiar brand can stumble when it loses sight of the customers who built it.
