Ex-Concordia swimmer accused in Maui killing

A former Concordia University Irvine swimmer is accused in the Maui killing of a 63-year-old security guard after an alleged break-in that police say was captured on surveillance video. Legend Storer, 20, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and indecent exposure in the case.

Officials confirmed that Storer attended the private Orange County university and competed on its men’s swim team, but he did not return after the school ended the program in May 2025. Ann Ashmon, the university’s associate vice president of strategic communications, said, “After Concordia discontinued the Men’s Swim program in May 2025, Legend did not return as a student.”

Police and prosecutors say the incident began around 1:45 a.m. on Aug. 5, when Storer allegedly broke into a condominium complex office in Kahana, Maui. Inside, security guard Michael Dyer was on a break. Investigators say surveillance footage showed an attack involving a five-gallon water bottle. Dyer was later found unresponsive at the complex and was pronounced dead.

About an hour after the alleged killing, police received reports of a naked man walking in the neighborhood. Officers found Storer roughly 30 minutes later with multiple abrasions and took him to a hospital for evaluation. After reviewing the video, investigators concluded the man brought to the hospital was allegedly the same person seen attacking Dyer.
